Worlds apart (or states apart, rather)
02 April 2009
Where Christi and I live now is amazing. There's lots to do out here and we're closer to both NYC and Boston than we were to Kansas City when we lived in Omaha. That means we have shorter access to pro sports (most notably, great baseball teams not named Atlanta) and even college sports (those UConn Huskies are pretty good at basketball). So when I read that only
20,000+ came out to watch the Yankees break in a new field I was a little disappointed by the lack of support. Don't get me wrong, I'm as far away from a Yankee fan that you can be, but I thought people would be pumped to break in the new place. After all of the millions of dollars they spent fielding a hopefully championship team, and they get less than half capacity.
This is compared to Nebraska where
60,000+ tickets were sold in less than a week for a scrimmage game where the fans won't even know who the starting quarterback will be.
Then again, on the flip side, The City (as it's referred to out here) has a little bit more to do than just watch baseball games.
