Stacking our cord of wood
27 September 2010
We decided to go away from the Duraflame's this year and go all natural, all fall/winter long. After a few unsuccessful attempts on Craigslist, I finally found someone local that would deliver a cord of wood to our house. I knew coming in that a cord is 4'x4'x8', but when it's delivered and just dumped on your yard, it looks much larger than that.
So after Christi helped me assemble the log storage units that we bought, I started stacking. First of all, Home Depot had storage for half a cord and a quarter of a cord, so I just figured 75% is close enough, and we'll just deal with the rest laying around somewhere. So as I started stacking, I started counting. 20 logs in a wheelbarrow trip each time. I counted 315 pieces that filled up what should have been 75% of our wood:
However, I still had at least half of the pile sitting on the side of my yard. So either I received much more than a cord of wood, or Home Depot can't measure or I'm absolutely horrible at stacking (even though I stacked even higher than I was supposed to, to get as much wood off the ground as I could).
With that, I made another stack on our lovely dirt pile that's left over from the patio. Another 360 pieces. So finally, I was done stacking, 675 pieces and 100 oz. of Gatorade later, I could finally relax. So what does one do when you're all finished? Light up the first fire of the year, of course. It's not even September yet, but we're going to have to have a fire a night until around March to use up all of this wood.
