Lessons I've learned from my father

stuck in traffic
As I'm sitting in my second straight traffic jam on the way to pick Henry up from daycare, I had a lot of time to ponder and one of the things that came to mind was how thankful I am for everything my father taught me up to this point in my life. Especially how to look to see what trucks are doing in these situations. Yeah, yeah, sounds like a small thing, but it's probably saved me a lot of time sitting in a car over the years.

When he was an architect, I learned cool things like always looking at a ceiling when first entering a new building as it's the main part that defines the space. Now that he's in the trucking business, I began to learn things like looking at which lanes trucks move to when there is construction, an accident, etc. Two key points here: The drivers are sitting up about twice as high as you to see further and they are talking to other truck drivers on the CB radio (do people even know what CBs are anymore?). Even when you're a good mile or so away from which lane the accident is in, if you see what they are doing, it saves a lot of time getting into the lane you need to be in.

Not sure what kinds of wisdom I'll be able to pass along to Henry, but hopefully it's something he can use later in life. Maybe I'll be able to teach him to write code for a baseball game while drinking some really good beer. When he's of age, of course ... you don't want to teach programming too young.
