XP > Tiger

14 October 2005
Ok, so most of you know the little situation that I created these past few days. On Thursday morning at work, I got most of the stuff done that I needed to, so I updated Tiger (10.4) on our Server computer that was running (10.3.8). Upon doing so, I crashed the Server when it loaded Tiger. It took me until 2:00 p.m. today to fix the problem (thank goodness that I took a Unix class here at the University!). In a nutshell, here's what went wrong:

When Mac's upgrade from 10.3.x to 10.4.x, they do something incredibly stupid. Instead of just writing new files, it goes through and changes critical file names (i.e. our Apache Server configuration file). It changed the word `rendevous` to `bonjour`. So, our server was looking for these `rendevous` files that didn't exist anymore.

Why XP > Tiger:
1) XP wouldn't have changed configuration files like that. It's smart enough to leave stuff like that alone, and not mess with it. Plus, I had to use the Terminal on the G5, and access the root files for the computer (not a good idea unless you really know what you're doing).

2) XP has a great feature called "System Restore". It has the ability to reconfigure your computer, and have it run exactly as it did a day ago, a week ago, a month ago... you get the picture. So, if we were running on a Windows system, we could've easily adverted the problem when it came about.

Bad news: My boss Tom said he would buy our old server guy (Ray) an iPod Nano if he came in and fixed it. Well, he hasn't extended that to me yet, so I'll just keep my fingers crossed.
